Tsunami Warnings from Pacific Tsunami Center

Chile was struck with a minute and half 8.8 magnitude earthquake today February 27, 2010. Death toll rose to over 300 people and tsunami warning was issued for 54 countries including the Philippines. (source: CNN news on tv, 7:30 PM Feb 28 Manila time)

According to the New York Times,

It struck at 3:34 a.m. local time and was centered about 200 miles southwest of Santiago, at a depth of 22 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter was some 70 miles from Concepcion, Chile’s second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live.
The Chile quake is now one of the trending topics at Twitter, and some users said the shaking was felt in Japan, Argentina and other parts. As of this time, a TSUNAMI ADVISORY now in affect along coastal California. Initial wave expected at 1:26pm today.

Tsunami warnings have been issued over a wide area, including South America, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and many Pacific islands.


Update 10:00PM Manila time: The Philippines is under Tsunami alert number 1. Though no evacuation yet is in effect but the east coast of the country is advised to wait for further information from Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii for detected tsunami activity.

Update 12:45 AM Feb 28 Manila time: The estimated arrival time of the first tsunami waves in the Philippines is between 1:00PM and 2:30PM (Philippine Time) later (Sunday afternoon) according to Philvocs website. Based on the map below, we might experience earthquake once the waves come in the territory.

Update 5:00 AM Feb 28 Manila time: New Zealand just got their first tsunami waves. Looking at the map above, NZ is on the 12-hour mark. As of this time, the world is waiting for the live feed from Hawaii as scientists predicted that at this time Hawaii should be getting its first waves. Reports at CNN tv states that there is already discoloration of waters in Hawaii waters.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency says a first, 10-centimeter high tsunami wave reached Minami-torishima, an island far out in the Pacific from Japan’s main islands, at 12:43PM Japan Time. Another wave of equal height followed 5-minutes later. People near coasts and rivers are under orders or are being advised to move to higher ground until the alerts are lifted.

Update 1:36 PM Feb 28 Manila time: Still from NHK World, Japan’s Meteorological Agency says the first tsunami have hit coastal areas of the country following a massive earthquake in Chile. A 30-centimeter-high tsunami was recorded at Nemuro on the northernmost island of Hokkaido shortly before 2 PM on Sunday Japan time.

Tsunami have reached coastal areas along the Pacific from Hokkaido to central Japan following Saturday’s massive earthquake in Chile. A 90-centimeter-high tsunami was observed at 3:09 PM Japan Time in Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture, in the northern part of the main island of Honshu. Earlier, a 40-centimeter-high tsunami was observed in Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture, and, a 50-centimeter-high wave was recorded in Onahama, Iwaki City, in Fukushima Prefecture. Evacuation orders and advisories have been issued for 540,000 households in Japan as of 2 PM Sunday.
